Couponing

Hey all, been away for a bit and just enjoying my summer...
Took a 3-week trip to Ottawa to visit family, and the weather is beautiful over there! Unfortunately I don't have any pictures to show you guys. But it's so much nicer than cold, cold Vancouver =(.

And I broke my favourite Ray-Bans! Those things cost me like $150, and they were new too... Damn. Guess it's time to shop for a new pair.

Anyway, updates are in order!
Recently I saw an episode of Extreme Couponing on TLC and my mind was freaking blasted. Just.. blown away. Wow. Some woman walks out with $600 worth of stuff... And she walks out with $40 of store credit in hand (yes, she got PAID to take merchandise basically). In my mind, that begs two questions...

1) What kind of store would allow that? I guess you can say that the store actually doesn't mind, because they can and will redeem all of those coupons with the manufacturer for money. At least, that's how the manager explained it - he even seemed pleased with this one avid shopper. But seriously though, she took up like an hour of the cashier's time just scanning the damn coupons. Everyone around was crowding to watch the spectacle.

2) Who the hell needs that much stuff? I caught a glimpse of her grocery bill and shopping cart... For instance, she has enough men's deordorant to last at least 4 years by my estimate and daily usage. She could feed a family of 7 for a year, solely on Pringles. And what does she do with this stuff? She stockpiles it in her goddamn basement. That's just incredible, even built racks and stuff to display her prized "trophies". I mean seriously, why not donate them to the food bank or something, to people who actually need this stuff? Instead you're going to hoard it all and let it go to waste? Just utterly incroyable.

Anyway, I would love to take up on the sport (who wouldn't want to get paid cash to get groceries?). But these people are basically full-time employed when it comes to finding coupons. That's simply the type of commitment that I can't make, and not just because I'm a student... Because I have a life. And for those kind of hours, even at minimum wage I'm sure I could pull in that kind of money working a decent job.

Alas, Canada's couponing scene is not anything like that of the US. For one thing, noone here duplicates your coupons (i.e. some US retailers will double an outsider's coupon). Another thing, is many stores don't allow you to use multiple coupons on one item. And lastly, many stores will STRAIGHT UP deny "coupon stackers" as we call them here (the except to this, I believe, is London Drugs).

Go figure.

How in the freaking world is that even possible? That goes to show you how retarded people can be. (not the woman obviously)

  2. Wow man that's pretty intense. So much stuff and they don't care at all? I guess it's like you said that they'll eventually redeem it. I also agree on your point where she just hoards it. At least donate it. It's not like she'll use men's deodorant and live off of Pringles....or will she O___o

  3. I've never ever understood that kind of hoarding mentality. Especially with food.

  4. @The entire commentary section - wait, WHAT?! There's seriously a friggin' show about COUPONING?

My god, Hollywood is just running out of ideas ain't they...? I mean, five shows about cake.

    Fucking...cake.

At least the Cake Boss is funny (and is as close to Jersey-related television as I've ever gotten) but the rest? Jesus friggin' gawd...

  7. The couponing has actually hit a wall here. They're finding people stealing Sunday papers and dumpster diving for more to get these deals.

  8. I've seen that episode, its messed up. I was back home, watching the show with my parents, commenting on how messed up these people are (ourselves included, for watching it), and then my mom says "I see no problem with getting good deals"

I see her being on that show soon enough.

  11. Imagine being in the checkout behind her when she pulls out her bag full of coupons, you'd lose the will to live.

  12. People actually do this stuff? huh. My dad paid £5 for £25 worth of groceries, but we only get enough to last the week, not for the apocalypse. If she's an American it's damn near guaranteed that food won't go to waste lol.

  14. Couponing system here is nothing like this, so no chance for scenario like this to happen, lol. I wouldn't mind to save a lil bit of money now and then, but I think the only option is chechking the items on sale.
Good to hear you have a nice vacation!

  20. I wish we had couponing in the UK. We get the odd coupon now and then but it's nothing like what they get in the US where they do $400 worth of shopping for $40.
    Truly it is madness.

  26. Havnt seen this show, sounds a bit too good to be true to get deals like that. Maybe they stretch the truth just a bit?

  28. In general I dislike coupons, I'd much rather stuff just go on sale. That way I don't have to cut-out and have a cashier scan 30-40 coupons so I can save $20. Money is money though, so I guess it's foolish not to use them.

  29. I don't want to base my life around coupons, I'm not that big a consumer.
And, $150.00 for sunglasses? What were you thinking? Or is there a lot of gold in them there glasses? I hate to tell you how much (little actually)I pay for sunglasses.
